Even After the Large Military Presence Ends, We Have to Stay Involved
Given the Weakness of the al-Malaki Government, We Will Need to Stay
Involved
Given last weeks failed attempt by the Iraqi Army to crack down on al-Sadr’s Madhi Army, we will need to stay involved in Iraq even after the large military presence starts to draw down, I would guess, in 2009.
The alternative would be a failed state, except possibly, in the Kurdish region. (The concern there being that a viable Kurdish State is a danger to Turkey, Syria and Iran.)
I think the idea of Somalia with more guns and 20% of the world’s proven reserves of oil under its bloody sands should concern everyone.
This should not be done like Viet Nam in 1973. I think Department of State and other USG agencies will be very involved in Iraq for a long time … or should be.
